Kirtan with Nina Rao
Join us for two hours of kirtan — a devotional practice of chanting together in community.
Kirtan is a form of call-and-response chanting of Sanskrit mantras. Through music and repetition, we gather our awareness, quiet the constant movement of the mind, and return to the present moment. For Nina, kirtan is a heart practice — one in which the music supports the chanting, while the repetition of the Divine Name remains at its center.
Nina first learned traditional chants from her grandfather in South India when she was nine years old. Years later, in New York, she rediscovered the practice through Krishna Das in 1996. Since then, she has accompanied and worked closely with him for nearly three decades, while continuing to deepen her own practice.
In 1998, Nina met her guru, Sri Siddhi Ma, in the foothills of the Himalayas, spending time with her regularly for 19 years. Chanting became her core sādhana — a practice she describes as a source of focus and refuge, and a way of opening the heart.
Come as you are. No singing skills or previous kirtan experience are needed, and listening is also part of the practice.
